The Diesel Export Ban: A Consequence of the Oil Industry's Credibility Problem (September 28, 2026)

 

The oil industry is unpopular. According to a Gallup poll, only the US government and the pharmaceutical industry are less popular. The public’s lack of trust in the industry helps explain why its efforts to expand face such strong resistance.

 

The industry's failure to communicate effectively explains many of its problems. More specifically, the oil industry is PARSIMONIOUS with the truth. While its officials are rarely caught lying, they treat industry operations as secrets, sharing as few as possible with the public.

 

Their parsimony has consequences. Their stance on a ban on US diesel exports is the most recent, and potentially most harmful, example.
