The Politics of Gasoline Prices: The Difficulty of Reinstating Sanctions on Iran (April 30, 2018)

 

The Republican party and President Trump especially have campaigned hard against the Iran nuclear agreement, officially the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), negotiated by the Obama administration in collaboration with the European Union and the United Nations. This last week, France’s President Macron and Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel met with the president and other US officials in hopes of persuading them to stick with the deal. Whether the US will do so is questionable. There is, though, one good reason now to expect the United States to stay with the pact: withdrawing from it would likely send US gasoline prices skyrocketing. This threat should and almost certainly will influence the president and Congress.
