A Policy Too Far? (October 8, 2018)

Our title this week is a variation on that of Cornelius Ryan’s great book A Bridge Too Far. In it, Ryan tells the story of Operation Market Garden, an attempt by the Allies to seize nine bridges in the Netherlands to establish an invasion route to Germany. Before the operation, one general had warned the British commander, Field Marshal Montgomery, "I think we may be going a bridge too far." Hence, Ryan’s title.

Today, the "too far" concern relates to policies of the United States. We suggest that the combined effect of several policies may create a serious economic crisis. We add that Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO, may have administered the coup de grâce last week when he raised his employees’ starting wage to $15 per hour.
