The American Decade, Perhaps the American Half-Century (October 2013)
We are living in the "American Decade" and stand a very good chance, as future historians may note, of living in the "American Half-Century." The pundits did not see this coming. In fact, many expected the opposite. Those who trumpeted America's impending decline—writers such as Niall Ferguson, Edward Luce, and Jeff Rubin—will deeply resent what is happening. It does not matter. Ten years from now, it will not be the Chinese or the Europeans or inhabitants of emerging market countries such as Brazil or the Russians who stand atop the global economic mountain. It will be Americans (Canadian, Mexican, and US citizens). This issue of The Petroleum Economics Monthly examines the trends that will drive the North American economies, particularly that of the United States, forward while constraining almost all other world regions.
