Oil's Coming Lehman Event (May 2012)
We have titled this issue of The Petroleum Economics Monthly "Oil’s Coming Lehman Event." Most readers will remember vividly Lehman Brothers' failure in 2008 and the consequences. Few, though, will recall the 1985/86 oil price collapse, and of those who do, none will remember the details. Yet the 1985/86 price plunge constituted a "Lehman Event" for oil markets. We suggest that oil will likely experience a second Lehman Event in coming months. Much lower oil prices will result.
