Energy Price Spikes: The Sequel (February 3, 2014)

 

The US East Coast has experienced a prolonged period of extreme cold. Not surprisingly, higher energy prices have resulted. Here, we review four episodes of colder-than-normal weather. In three of the four, prices rose significantly. One, however, was just a “ho-hum” event. In that one, stocks were high, which just happened to coincide with active involvement of passive investors and hedge funds, and prices remained calm. In this report, we explain the differences between these events and note, again, that current actions by liberal Democrats in Congress and the CFTC to help consumers will do just the opposite.
