For the Want of a RIN (December 12, 2011)
Our least favorite governmental entity, the US Environmental Protection Agency, may, through its inbred ineptness, be bringing the entire US economy needlessly to its knees. The actions taken by its air quality division may reduce the gasoline supply available to US consumers significantly in 2012. As a consequence, retail gasoline prices in parts of the country could pass $6 per gallon next spring and summer, even if crude prices fall below $100 per barrel and gasoline supplies outside the United States remain abundant. Another possibility is Republicans meeting in Tampa in August and Democrats in Charlotte in September will be paying $7 per gallon if no one fixes the EPA’s problems.
